July 28th, 2014 Queen Charlotte to Tlell

Last night we sat outside of our motel and watched at least 10 bald eagles flying around and perching themselves on a little island in the harbour. When they flew overhead you could see how massive they were.

This morning after  huge breakfast we drove North on Graham Island to Tlell. It was a trip of about an hour and we took our time. Again we had rain, wind and wild conditions.

The skies were gravy and there were whitecaps on the ocean.

We arrived at our destination at noon. The Haida house at Tlell. It is lovely, clean and quiet. After we checked in, we drove up island to Massett. We must have counted at least 50 deers eating grass in the ditches. They are not a native species to the island and have no real natural predators.

We bought gas, wine and groceries in Massett. Haida Gwaii has four gas stations. At a $1.80 a liter it is pricey to drive around. However, there are no stations so keeping a full tank is a must. Our hotel has no dining room service tonight, we bought buns, and cold cuts for dinner and picnic lunches.

The old cemetery in Old Massett.

Whimsical bird houses in Port  Clements.

The Rainbow wharf in Port Clements.

Before dinner we took the trail behind our hotel to the beach. I hope to get some good photos tomorrow.

We also tried to find the old totems at Old Massett. Will try again.
