Friday July 24, 2015 The City of Arles

The day started with a bus ride to Arles. This is where Vincent Van Gogh painted many of his works, the sunflowers, starry night, the cafe. He also spent some time in the hospital here. There are also many remains of roman , medieval and 18th century architecture.
The city is totally surrounded by a roman wall. There are only a view ways to enter it.
It was very busy here with many tourists of all nationalities walking along the streets.
Plants try to climb everywhere.
There is a famous colleseum here which is still used today for bull fighting. Pablo Picasso was influenced by these fights. He also spent some time in Arles.
A very large building which can seat quite a few thousand.
Our tour guide had a great sense of humour and explained why the bullfights were important to the city of Arles.
The corridors are huge.
A local bull fight poster.
The Center square in Arles.
Lots of interesting museums, art galleries and ruins.
The garden outside the hospital where Van Gogh stayed. He also painted this garden.
The cafe where Van Gogh painted his painting. Arles also had great shopping. We returned in the afternoon and walked the streets on our own. There are great fabric stores as well as European clothing stores.
The Viking Buri had a cocktail party on the upper deck. We sailed down the Rhone and took pictures of the famous bridge of Avignon.
The bridge at night. It is only half a bridge.
Dusk on the bridge. It was a beautiful cruise. Another busy day on the cruise.
