Sunday July 26, 2015 Villeneuve lez Avignon

This morning we left the Viking ship Buri. We took a taxi to our new hotel O'Cub (cube) hotel in Villeneuve lez Avignon. The manager gave us some excellent suggestions for sight seeing. So at just before 10:00 am , we were on our way on foot. The Mistral wind was blowing from north to south, which meant it was very pleasant to walk. It was also Sunday morning, so not a lot of traffic and quiet streets. The first place we passed were these gardens.
The groto walls line up behind the gardens. No dog poo or garbage anywhere.

Then we walked up the hill to the Philippe Le Bel Tower. A very lovely lady explained all about a pass which would give us discounts on so some of the attractions. This tower was built in the 14th century and controlled the access to the Avignon bridge until the end of the 17th century.
There were some lovely views and clean bathrooms.
Many explanations were also in English .
Inside the tower.
The view from the top.
Back on our walk, the views were lovely. Old walls everywhere .
The streets and paths wound down to the little village.
The entrance to the Chartreuse du Val-de-Benediction. A palace monastery.
Inside the monastery.
Very quiet and serene.
Lovely flowers and buildings.
After the monastery we walked to the saint Andre Abbey and gardens.

The fort was impressive but hot, we chose to tour the gardens instead.
The view from the Pope's terraces.
Lovely cobblestones, again back to the 14th century.
The Abbey kitchen.
Another view from the terrace.
The gardens were very dry. There has been no rain in southern France either.
There was a little cafe inside the abbey.
The crypt where the old popes were buried.
St. Casarie chapel in the  gardens. We had lunch in the village square at a lovely place called "Chic Picnic." Lovely bagels, paninis and sandwiches. Reasonably priced.
The Cube hotel in Villeneuve. Modern colours but very retro.
On the terrace enjoying our champagne and cassis. Getting ready to go for dinner at Bassa Cosi Italian restaurant. I would recommend visiting Villeneuve. It is very clean and not as many tourists.
